AN INTRODUCTION to the CHATGILIALOGLU GROUP

The research activity of the Group focuses on free-radical chemistry with a multidisciplinary approach informed by structure-reactivity-mechanism studies leading to applications in synthetic methodologies, materials science, and in the life sciences.

Dr Chatgilialoglus extensive background in organic and physical chemistry has been forged by decades of high-level research in these fields, and his Group is widely esteemed for its contributions in the scientific community at international level.

The focus on synthetic strategies and biomimetic radical chemistry has lead to the discovery and development of tris(trimethylsilyl)silane as radical-based reducing agent (Fluka prize “Reagent of the Year 1990”), as well as to the discovery of endogenous formation of trans-lipids in humans; while research on 5’,8=cyclopurine DNA lesions and fatty acid-based membrane lipidomics has attracted worldwide attention.

Key technical and scientific advances by the group in lipidomics have been applied to the market for biomedical diagnostics via the spin-off company Lipinutragen founded by Drs Chatgilialoglu and Ferreri in Italy.
